Thirteen photos from Gabe's collection
- Icebergs in the lake, looking down from the ravine camp. Although
the icebergs are not huge, they are considerable: the foreground bergs
were about the size of a VW Beetle. The ice is extremely hard (because
it has no air embedded).
- The toe of the glacier, viewed from near the rock camp. This is the
glacier seen to the right in all the photos looking at the end of
Lago Leone.
- View from the red saddle camp, looking back over the bowl we
hiked up through (and dropped then recovered our rations). The
lake and glacier are hidden by the ridge in the middle of the
photo.
- The red saddle camp, looking from the top of the camp
downwards. Notice that everyone is bundled up (and not many
people are out), and the flag by the instructor's tent is straight
out. This was a very windy spot!
- Weather over the Campo de Hielo Norte. We would attempt
to get up top, but be trapped in snow caves in whiteout
conditions.
- Another weather shot, with the same "Eqies" (X on the rock) formation
to the right. The cloud cover would advance and recede, but seldom
disappear, from the Campo.
- Looking up in the cave. We used tent poles to try to catch
some dripping water.
- Gabe in the cave, with John in sight. Greg's
sleeping bag is in the foreground.
- Traversing a steep ridge on our retreat from the snow
caves. It was still quite windy. Some people got blown over,
and needed to self-arrest using ice axes to keep from rolling down
the slope.
- Walking up a rocky snowy slope
- Looking down at the Lago Leone on the way out. The ravine
we camped in at the start of the trip is to the right, and
behind the ridge to the right is the toe of the glacier that leads,
more or less, to the red saddle camp.
- Compass class on the way out. We stopped for compass
class after ascending from the ravine, heading back towards the
head of Leone. Nate is standing on the left, Josh on the right.
Seated, from left to right, are Traverse, John, and Shawn.
- On the way out, the instructor's flag looking back towards
the head of Leone and the glaciers.
