Advanced ZIP Password Recovery

Advanced ZIP Password Recovery (or simply AZPR) can be used to recover lost or forgotten passwords for a ZIP/PKZip/WinZip archives. Unfortunately, there is no known method to extract the password from the compressed file; so the only available methods are brute-force, dictionary-based and known-plaintext attacks.
Well, there are a lot of programs like this around, but all of them have their own "pros" and "cons". Here is a brief list of AZPR's advantages:
  • The program has a convenient user interface
  • The program is very fast: up to fifteen million passwords per second (on Pentium III)
  • Very fast and effective known plainext attack is available
  • The program can work with archives containing only one encrypted file
  • ZIP files created by various software packages (including PKZIP 1.x) are supported
  • All compression methods (storing, imploding, shrinking, inflating) are supported
  • Self-extracting archives are supported
  • The program is customizable: you can set the password length (or length range), the character set to be used to generate the passwords, and a couple of other options
  • You can select the custom character set for brute-force attack (non-English characters are supported)
  • Dictionary-based attack is available
  • The "brute-force with mask" attack is available
  • The maximum password length is not limited
  • No special virtual memory requirements
  • You can interrupt the program at any time, and restart from the same point later
  • The program can work in the background, using the CPU only when it is in idle state

As you can see, ZIP password protection is not very secure -- AZPR can recover 90-95% of all passwords in a reasonable time. Even if the password is long is well selected, known-plaintext attack might be applicable, which can decrypt an archive in just a few minutes (sometimes hours). We strongly don't recommend you to use WinZip to compress/encrypt important data; instead, please have a look at CuteZIP from the authors of well-known CuteFTP -- absuletely the best ZIP compression utility. Besides "standard" ZIP encryption, it allows to you to use very strong BlowFish algorithms for securing your data. Moreover, it supports all most-popular archive formats (ARJ, RAR, CAB, ACE) and has a lot of very nice features like cdripping, mp3 encoding and shell integration. A must-have tool for everyone!
