Viruses and Other Nasties

  • See our notes from August 30 for some basic terminology

Sample: F-PROT
  • Available: shareware.unc.edu
  • Installing f-prot:
    1. Download the self-extracting executable from shareware.unc.edu/win.html, put it in a temporary location such as C:\TEMP
    2. Extract the executable to a directory you choose (the directory will be created for you if you want), such as C:\F-PROT\
    3. You can now run f-prot from wherever you installed it, e.g,. C:\F-PROT\F-PROT
    4. You periodically need to get new virus definitions. F-PROT keeps two sets of files for this, one for viruses in executable files, and another for macro viruses. You can also get a new version of F-PROT (the shareware.unc.edu version is not necessarily the most current). The file UPDATES.TXT describes where to get these files. Current locations include:
    5. Note that you need to have a program to unzip your files to get the macro and virus definitions. Both SimtelNet and shareware.unc.edu have versions you can use, as does winzip.com
