Computer Use in INLS 187

Laptop

  • The laptop is required for INLS 187, though generally we'll make light use of it. Bring it to class daily, prepared to network.
  • If you feel able, consider setting up a Linux dual-boot system (assuming you already have a MS-Windows system). This will let you work with much more software than you could with MS-Windows alone. But do this cautiously, make backups first!

General Computer Use

  • We have a few systems from INLS 183 that could be setup as Linux servers for software experimentation. gbn will use one; other students are welcome to set up others. Depending on how many people are interested, we might make this more or less of an organized and structured effort.
  • It's good to have system administrator access to both a Windows and a Linux/Unix system (other systems, including Mac, BSD, etc., are also useful). This comes in handy for class exercises and assignments.
  • Please be cautious when using a computer. Some of the software we'll discuss could cause damage or disruption to other people's systems. Ask first before scanning or trying to test someone else's system.
